3.0 beta released

From: Jeremy Elson (jelson@blaze.cs.jhu.edu)

I am pleased to announce the public release of CircleMUD version 3.00 BETA,
patchlevel 4.

It's currently at ftp.cs.jhu.edu:/pub/CircleMUD.

This is BETA software, meaning:

OLC is not finished and is not included in this beta release.
Some of the spells don't work correctly.
There will probably still be some system incompatibilities since
I have not exhaustively tested the software on platforms
other than the one I use for development (currently a
		Sparc 10 running SunOS 4.1.3).
There will probably be some bugs.
Most of the utilities don't work yet since I haven't ported them
		from Circle 2.20.
There is not yet any software to convert from 2.20 playerfiles
		to the 3.0 format.
The documentation is still very incomplete.
The playerfile and other binary file formats are subject to
change between now and the full production release.
Certain things just haven't been written yet; i.e. saving aliases.
THIS RELEASE IS UNSUPPORTED. Do not run a MUD with it!

If you are a programmer and can solve problems on your own, then I welcome
you to try the beta release out and see how it runs. However, if you are
new to MUD administration, new to MUDding in general, or don't know how
to program in C very well, I strongly suggest that you IGNORE this beta
release and wait for the full release. THIS RELEASE IS UNSUPPORTED, which
means that if you write me mail containing what I consider to be a newbie
question, I will respond with a form letter telling you to wait for the
full production release.

You can always turn to the mailing list for help, though, since there are
lots of knowledgeable and friendly people there. Write to
circle-request@marble.bu.edu to subscribe. circle@marble.bu.edu is the
list's actual address.

Good luck,

Jeremy
