What functionality do you require? I implemented mine as a user toggle bit and set
a (AFK) flag on the who.. THe toggle also sends a message to_room "Blah is afk"
"Blah is back"

Been thinking about making more of the functions of the mud 'see' this flag.. 
Maybe not make people hungry/thirst, et al.. The obvious problem is cheating..

Another thought.. Make significant actions auto-remove the flag.. Like talking, etc.
Lots of people forget to toggle it off when they return.
