[CODE][NEWBIE] weaponskills

Hi all,

I'm trying to implement some new skill-system. It goes like this:
* Every skill has a level: 0 (unknown) to 10 (superb). It's the same 
  as in the original CircleMUD.
* When you practice a skill, you level in that skill.
With this i have no problems, but I also want to add skills for using 
weapons : unarmed, dagger, sword, staff, mace, club, polearm, whip, axe
and spear.
The idea is that when a character's skill is 0. He doesn't know how to
wield the weapon. When he has learned a type of weapon, he can wield it,
but his Thac0 depends on the level of that skill. (Much like kick)

Until now I only have used patches and snippets of others to modify my
mud, so I'm new in the coding. What is the best way to handle this ? Or
does anyone has such code on his mud that I can look at?
