I believe some versions of BSD use ports 1024 through 5000 as
ephemeral ports. This sounds like it could be your problem. Try
moving the port the mud runs on to something above 5000. Also,
check out ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/port-numbers
for a list of well known ports.
