 Yes. Look at the code used in nanny() when you manually delete a char:
      SET_BIT(PLR_FLAGS(d->character), PLR_DELETED);
      save_char(d->character, NOWHERE);
      Crash_delete_file(GET_NAME(d->character));

 That should do it. Along with some checking...
