I had/have a similar problem.  I got the same invalid vnum on some 
objects I tried to load.  I found out that they were the first objects in 
my .obj file.  So, I created a garbage item in the offending .obj file 
and the item I wanted loaded fine.  I havent found the true problem with 
it yet.  You may want to check and see if this problem fits what you are 
experiancing.
