These things (variables) would be your own extensions to mobprogs.
Not a bad idea, though, since mobprogs don't have variables in
the first place (other than the act codes).  I'm under the
impression that a new scripting language needs to be written for
CircleMUD, because mobprogs have always left a particularly foul
taste in my mouth -- even if you add features to it (it's not just
an issue of power; but of how it does things internally, which is
sickening and over-complex).

Well, I suppose it doesn't help to complain, so maybe I'll sit down
and do it (no promises, of course).  I've beenw anting to write a
script language for a while, yet, so this might be a good time to
brush up on writing parsers. :)
