A good editor can help with balancing parens BTW - for example, in joe
just press Control-G to go to the other matching paren: so if you are at
the outermost left paren, press ^G and go to the not quite last right
paren, something's wrong.
fte has also this fature, as does emacs and probably most other Unix
editors.
