you can start a process without a controlling terminal by using the nohup
command...

ie:

nohup ls

will start ls without a terminal.. (this will lead ls to go to a STOP) ..

anywas ... do:

nohup mud

... (doesn't circle detach itself from  the controlling terminal?)
