Your strength spells don't have cummulative affect, do they? ;)
Personally, I killed all the cummulative affects AND durations.
Can lead to situations like the one you describe, usually without
your realizing it.
That you can continue to wield a weapon after a strength spell
has worn off is, I believe, a relic from the original Diku source.
I don't generally have a problem with it, but hey! it's your mud :)
