Thoughts About Abbreviations

I really like the abbreviation codes, though there are a couple things
that are detering me from putting them into my realm. One of the things is
that sometimes, if coded wrong, it can mess up things like tells and other
things because you go to do something to say "Al" and end up doing it to
"Alley Cat" and stuff like that. I have seen abbreviation codes where you
need an argument to abbreviate, meaning to abbreviate something you would
have to do "tell al* hey, whats up?" and you would get the first thing that
it found that was Al, or whatever was next. The problem with this is you
can make alias' like "kill 2.*" and kill the second thing in the room. Some
might not see that as a problem, I do.

Anyone seen a really good way to do abbreviations? Or maybe thoughts on
ways to have an abbreviation code? I am not looking for code, I am able to
make the code on my own. Was merely looking for ideas.
