Could do the same thing your patch does with popen() to call 'ps'.

Does a 'Virtual Memory' size exist instead of just RSS? Perhaps that is
filled in with Linux.  (i.e.: total instead of just what is currently not
swapped out.)   Or make a multiplatform wrapper or something.
