Your way is one possible method.  The other is to get dak's "Mana Drain"
patch, available at George's web site (http://www.van.ml.org/CircleMUD).

BTW, I've found that it helps to completely go through your code idea on
paper before attempting to code it.  Leaves less loopholes in the code,
also lets you decide if you want to go through with it before you've got a
jumbled mess of code.
