I always thought this approach was a better one:

That way everything gets stacked. It may be a little overactive and
unfancy, but it gets the job done.
BTW, /patches/ is my old CircleMUD Solutions site but I didn't feel like
adding my patches to the developer site since they're mostly out of date.
All of the contributed patches were moved over though. /patch/ is the
official developer section for that type of thing.
