Actually, there are several snippets on the FTP site, as well as the
developer site that have already covered this sort of thing.
If I were you, I would look into the portal code on the FTP site and
hack that to work the way you want it to. The problem with portals is
that they use several instances of the same object when you cast them,
and when I tried to make manual portals for my Windoze CircleMUD, I
created a few bugs. I'm sure some creative coding on my part could have
easily overcome the problems, but I never got around to finishing the
whole darn thing anyway.

While you're in there, look around a bit. I found most of the stuff
in the FTP site to be of great value to myself in the early stages of
coding, the snippets/patches I couldn't use directly gave me some ideas
on how to do other things I wanted.
