Shell MUD Control

I've heard alot about "doing it from the shell" such as advancing yourself
and such. How do you go about doing this? I have an SSH server (Van Dyke
Vshell), which is for my co-coder to access the MUD. I understand I can
connect to the MUD directory, but how do I control the MUD with full-power
from the outside?
