You have memory corruption somewhere else. Try using one of the
environment variables:

EF_ALIGNMENT=0
EF_PROTECT_BELOW=1
EF_PROTECT_FREE=1

to see if those find anything while running ElectricFence.  For bash that'd
be:

EF_ALIGNMENT=0 bin/circle
