BSX mud does this - you get text in a separate window
from the graphics, and can play without the graphics
(not very well, since a lot of the info you need to play
comes from the pictures, but you can socialize :)
accordingly.

I played on a BTech MUSE years ago, all ascii.
It did get annoying to have to keep bringing up the
tactical map every few seconds, but you got used to it
and wasn't a big deal after a while.
