Changing VNum's to long

From: John Evans (evansj@HI-LINE.NET)

I've noticed that vnums limit that max # of zones that you can
have to 326. Right now, this is not a problem, but in the (very distant)
future it could be limiting.
I am considering 'converting' all vnums over to longs so that
the problem of running out of zones won't hit until my grandson is running
the MUD and I'm a gray old man with cybernetic hands to replace these
aching CTS'ed out wrists.

Has anyone done this (looks simple, no?) and if you ran into any
problems with it, what were they?

Another question I have is porting. I am running on RedHat 5.0
now and am VERY happy with my server, but I'm not a fool and I know that
nothing lasts forever. If, for some unforseen reason, I have to port to a
different (non-Microsoft) OS, what problems would there be with this, if any?

Thanks in advance for any insight or advice that you may have to offer.
