Has anyone implemented a system to match the type of weapon to the type
of armor during combat to increase or decrease the amount of damage?

Hence.. A slashing weapon would do more damage to someone with Leather
Armor than to someone with Plate..

Maybe putting in a flag for armor type and during combat a simple check
to increase or decrease the damage, default would not change.. hmmm but
what main part of the body will it protect? ON body, About body? hmmm It
could get complicated..
