You mention that it saves, but you don't mention it being loaded.  The ego
must be parsed in db.c parse_object.  If not, the ego's value will never
come into the game.  Note that you do NOT have to add ego to the
object_file_elem in structs.h since this is normally a value that doesn't
change.
