Yes, db.c. Look at save_char and load_char. You'll need to add a
line to pfdef.h for each new var as well.

ASCII pfiles have the advantage over binary, that they can (easily,
meaning without player file conversion) be expanded. They have the
drawback, however, that you must write the expansion yourself,
instead of just adding it to a struct.
