I ran across this bit of commented code in act.movement.c, in has_boat()..

    if (ROOM_IDENTITY(ch->in_room) == DEAD_SEA)
    return 1;

Does anyone know what it was?  At a guess it would be something to 
identify water a that you'd float in, but that doesn't explain the
