I have the same problem, also pulling my hair out over it.  I tried
George's latest patch, but because I had the aedit patch in, it failed
in olc.c and olc.h.  So I patched the rejects on by hand, and it's
still crashing the MUD.  If I find a fix for it I'll let you know...
