I think I've tracked down the problem...

When I did patch < hedit.patch to get the rejects and hedit.c file, it
informed me
that it is a "malformed patch at line 419"

Is perhaps the hedit.c file in there messed up?  I know its a stretch, but
its the only
thing I could think of.  Could someone mail me their working hedit.c and
let me know?
