My map code works perfectly well with non-contiguous regions.  Simply
an entry for "blankness" and that's that.  Other continents will most
likely end up below the main continent in the file itself though
they'll be east or west of it geographically.  This causes problems
perhaps wil sailing from one continent to the other, but that can be
handled pretty easily... besides, 700k of empty water squares for the
correct proportions would be a bit annoying.
