Yes, this is termed a blocking function and it will bring the mud to
a screeching halt til it returns a value. It's only really annoying
if you have a lot of players logging on after a reboot. For this
reason ours is presently set to a 3 second wait.

I started ours at 1 second (extreme paranoia value as I termed it). After
a couple days I changed it to 3 and almost doubled the number of userids.
