Snooping locations

This is my first post to this mailing list so I'll try and make a good
impression. :-)

I'm looking for a way to "snoop" anything that happens in a certain room using
the location of a char/obj as reference.

For instance, suppose I made a spell called "hidden eyes" or something. A mage
casts this spell on an object on the ground and leaves the room. Now, whatever
happens in the room that, that object is in, the mage will see surrounded by a
certain character (exactly like imm's see snooped text). I could also
implement the same type of thing in charmed pets. And by getting rid of the
check that disables pets from leaving their masters.. well, you could have
some fun.

I have an inkling of an idea as to how to implement this. Perhaps I could make
a new member in some structure or other just like the snooped_by (forget the
exact name), and put the location of that object in it.... and ????.... (I
think that Nirvana music my friends are playing in the background is eroding
my brain).

Maybe I'm making this too complicated and I can merely utilate the snooped_by
member to my advantage....

If anybody has any ideas or hints or feels like telling me how to do this
outright (although where's the fun in that?), it would be most welcome.
